Fifty years ago today, Tom Stafford, John Young, and Gene Cernan lifted off from launch pad 39B for their dress rehearsal of lunar landing.  They would enter lunar orbit and use the Lunar Module to descend near but not all the way to the moon’s surface.  Their successful mission cleared the way for Apollo 11 two months later.
